ARLINGTON, TEXAS -- The SUU Track and Field Team was competing in the WAC Outdoor Championships in Arlington, Texas, and walked away with two first-place finishes.
Jaylee Gandert and Bronis MacDougall each claimed the Western Athletic Conference title in the Javelin throw. Gandert threw for 156 feet and 1 inch, and MacDougall crushed the competition with a 221-foot 2-inch throw. Besting the field by over 20 feet.
Head Coach Eric Houle said
"Incredibly proud of our team. Our throws team was incredible, and everybody competed very hard. We saw a lot of success during our time in the WAC and we are grateful for our time in the conference."
Men's Recap
The Thunderbirds finished fourth as a team, scoring 96 points across 21 events.
MacDougall led the team with a first-place finish in the javelin, but four other T-Birds also earned a spot on the podium.
Andrew Cooper finished third in the hammer throw with a toss of 188 feet and 6 inches. Jared Sharp earned a third-place finish in the decathlon with 6,074 points. Zsombor Takacs took third in the discus and moved up to fourth in SUU's history books with a 173-foot-7-inch throw, and Isley Gutierriez finished second in the conference with a 13.88 time in the 110 hurdles.
Women's Recap
The Women's team finished in fifth overall with 78 points as a team.
Jaylee Gandert led the women with a first-place finish in the javelin. Kimmie Winward also had an outstanding performance at the WAC Championships with a second-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:12.46. Aspen Hacker wasn't far behind with a fourth-place finish and a time of 2:13.56.
Jessica Jericoff just missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in the hammer throw, logging a 175-foot-11-inch throw. Kadee Harland also just missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in the javelin, with a 127-foot-11-inch throw.
Lily Collier moved into the No. 10 spot in SUU history with a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon, scoring 4,472 points.
