Jason Marsteller joined the Southern Utah University Athletics staff in September 2026, returning to the department where his career in collegiate athletics began nearly three decades earlier.
Marsteller’s career in sports communications traces back to his time as a high school football statistician in Arizona and California from 1988-94. He continued working in athletics at Phoenix College from 1994-96 before arriving at Southern Utah.
From 1998-2002, Marsteller served as a student intern in the SUU Athletics sports information office, working under the tutelage of SUU Athletics Hall of Famer Neil Gardner and current Utah Tech Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations Steve Johnson. He graduated from SUU with honors in 2002, earning a Bachelor of Science in Communication with emphases in interpersonal communication and public relations.
Marsteller continued his education at the University of Tennessee, where he served as a graduate assistant in the sports information office from 2002-04 under the mentorship of CoSIDA Hall of Famer Debby Jennings. During his time in Knoxville, he assisted with the administration of multiple Southeastern Conference and NCAA championship events while earning his master’s degree in sports administration.
He then spent two years as an Assistant Sports Information Director at Indiana University from 2004-06, where his responsibilities included helping administer multiple Big Ten championship events.
In 2006, Marsteller returned to Arizona to join Swimming World Magazine, eventually serving as General Manager of Digital Properties. During his decade with the publication, he helped spearhead Swimming World’s transition from a primarily print-based publication into the digital and social media era. He had the opportunity to work alongside International Swimming Hall of Fame Al Schoenfield Media Award recipients Bob Ingram and John Lohn during his tenure.
Marsteller stepped away from the sports industry in 2016 when he and his family returned to Cedar City. He spent the next decade working in customer service, training, account management and technology, where he developed and implemented training and process-improvement programs that dramatically reduced onboarding times and improved organizational efficiency.
Despite leaving sports professionally, Marsteller remained connected to Southern Utah Athletics. He returned to the department as a volunteer special assistant, contributing wherever needed in athletics communications, including during the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In September 2026, Marsteller’s career came full circle when he accepted a full-time position with Southern Utah Athletics, returning to the department where Gardner first opened the door to a career in sports communications nearly 30 years earlier.
For Marsteller, returning to his alma mater and Southern Utah Athletics represents the fulfillment of a longtime dream.
Marsteller and his wife, Erin, reside in Cedar City with their son, Benjiman.
