CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah University men's basketball coach Todd Simon has announced his team will travel to take on national powerhouse Michigan in Ann Arbor as part of the 2021-22 schedule.
The matchup will take place Saturday, December 18, at Michigan's Crisler Center. Tip-off time and broadcast details will be announced at a later date.
"We are excited to make the trip to Michigan this season," Simon said. "They are a premier program that will be ranked in the preseason top-10 and contend for a national title. This will be an outstanding test for us and help us prepare for Big Sky play."
The Wolverines compiled a record of 23-5 last season, which culminated in being selected as a No. 1 seed at the NCAA Tournament and a subsequent Elite Eight appearance. Like SUU, Michigan also secured its league's regular season championship in the Big Ten. The Maize and Blue are led by head coach Juwan Howard.
December's matchup between the Thunderbirds and Wolverines will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. SUU's last outing against a Big Ten program took place in November of 2019 when the T-Birds traveled to Nebraska and took down the Cornhuskers in double overtime by a score of 79-78. Southern Utah last played in the state of Michigan in 2018 on a road trip to face the Chippewas of Central Michigan.
In addition to the game at Michigan, SUU has announced it will play in the Palms Division of the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off in Fort Myers, Florida. SUU will be in the same bracket as Milwaukee, Bowling Green and Yale. The Thunderbirds will also face a member of the Beach Division before arriving in Fort Myers, which consists of Florida, Ohio State, Cal and Seton Hall.
The T-Birds enter the new season fresh off a 20-4 campaign and Big Sky regular-season championship. SUU has received multiple boosts in the previous months with the return of John Knight III in addition to the signing of two incoming members of the freshman class and two transfers.
