Thunderbirds Capture Wins On and Off the Field on Saturday

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 11 - Southern Utah women's soccer used three first-half goals to post a 3-0 shutout victory over the Westminster Griffins on Saturday afternoon in front of the largest crowd of the season during the team's annual "Breast Cancer Awareness" game.  The win moves the Thunderbirds to 4-7-0 on the year, while Westminster drops to 5-8-1.

"I was happy the team was able get the win today and put on a good show for the crowd," head coach Brian Stock said.  "However, I was upset that we didn't play a full 90 minutes and were not able to get any goals in the second half.  I just felt like we didn't play to the final whistle."

Southern Utah recorded all of their goals in the first 45 minutes of the game with Erin Marble starting the attack in the 7th minute, blasting the ball into the back of the net as she broke ahead of the Westminster defense at about 12 yards.  Laura Goodrich was credited with the assist.

In the 30th minute, freshman Stacey Brinkman placed a cross to the feet of Shaley Ipson-Allen and the senior tucked it away into the lower corner, making the score 2-0.

Erica Berlin's penalty kick in the 36th minute put the 'Birds up 3-0 with the lead holding through the intermission.

The second half proved to be fruitless for both sides with a blizzard during the final eight minutes of the game making play even more difficult.  In the end, the 3-0 mark was showing on the scoreboard when the final horn sounded.

Southern Utah matched its shots and penalties with 20 in each category, with both marks greater than their opponent's tally of seven shots and three penalties.

Senior goalkeeper Sutton Fox recorded her first shutout of the season with a full 90 minutes in goal and five saves.

Off of the field, a greater win came through the sale of merchandise, raffles and food to raise money towards breast cancer research.  The team raised over $1,500 in 2007 and set a goal for this year of collecting over $5,000 for breast cancer research.  Donations can still be made online at: www.komendonations.org/goto/suusoccer.

Southern Utah will return to conference play next weekend as the Thunderbirds take their final road trip of the year with games at IUPUI (Oct. 17) and Oral Roberts (Oct. 19).
