Southern Utah Records 1-0 Conference Win over Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. - Oct. 19 - Southern Utah women's soccer picked up a crucial conference win with a 1-0 victory over Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon, putting the Thunderbirds back into the mix among the leaders of The Summit League.  SUU moved to 5-8-0 with the win (2-3-0 Summit) while Oral Roberts dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference.

"This was a big win for us today," head coach Brian Stock said after the match.  "Our defense did a great job of dealing with a speedy attack and really came through for us."

Southern Utah junior Makell Hansen broke through for the Thunderbirds, scoring the only goal of the game in the 21st minute.  The shot was sent towards the goal from 35 yards and was misplayed by the ORU keeper, glancing off her gloves and into the back of the net.  The goal gave SUU a 1-0 lead that held throughout the rest of the contest.

Oral Roberts out shot the Thunderbirds ten to seven in the first half and 18 to 14 in the game, but it was a tough SUU defense that kept the Golden Eagles scoreless to preserve the shutout.  The game marked the second clean sheet for senior Sutton Fox this year.

The game featured a bevy of fouls with 16 on the Thunderbirds to ten awarded to Oral Roberts.  The Golden Eagles also accumulated four yellow cards to Southern Utah's one.

SUU will wrap up the season with three consecutive home games in Cedar City, beginning with IPFW and Centenary next weekend.  Kick-off against the Mastodons is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Friday with the Sunday game against the Ladies beginning at 1:00 p.m.
