CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 24 - Southern Utah women's soccer recorded a
barrage of shots with one finally breaking the plane in the second half
as the Thunderbirds recorded a 1-0 victory over IPFW on Friday
afternoon. The win improves SUU to 6-8-0 on the year and 3-3-0 in
conference, while the Mastodons remain winless on the season with a
0-15-1 mark and 0-5-1 record in The Summit League.
"I was really happy with our scoring opportunities today," head coach Brian Stock said. "We were finally able to get one through in the second half and did a great job of keeping the pressure on."
Southern Utah held its opponent scoreless for the third time in four games and have only allowed one goal over that same stretch. The SUU back line held the Mastodons to only nine shots on the afternoon, compared to the 24 shots recorded by the Thunderbirds.
The T-Birds recorded 14 of those shots in the first 45 minutes of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net as IPFW keeper Kristen McFadden recorded seven of her nine saves on the day in the first half. SUU just missed a goal in the 42nd minute as freshman Elyse Alexander bent a ball to the top corner of the goal, but just struck the ball too hard as it bounced off the corner of the goal and out of play.
Shaley Ipson-Allen was dead-on in her shot in the second half as the senior collected the ball played on from Erica Berlin in the 61st minute and drove toward the goal. Ipson-Allen made a move to her right and then cut the ball back as the keeper committed and then played the ball back to the box, touching it in from six yards. The goal was her team-high fifth of the year with Berlin's third assist of the year also a team high. Berlin has now tied her sister Cassidy (2004-07) for second all-time in assists at Southern Utah and could move into first place with one assist over the final two games.
Senior keeper Sutton Fox recorded her third shutout of the year, moving into second-place all-time in that category with a total of four in her career.
Southern Utah will have two more games remaining in the season, beginning with a Sunday match at home against Centenary. Kick-off between the T-Birds and Ladies is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. SUU will then wrap up the season on Halloween, facing the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at 3:00 p.m.
