Second Half Effort Not Enough as Women's Soccer Falls at NDSU, 2-0

FARGO, N.D. -  Oct. 3 - Southern Utah outshot North Dakota State eight to three over the final 45 minutes, but two goals in the first half proved to be the deciding factor as the Thunderbirds lost 2-0 to the Bison in women's soccer action Friday afternoon.  The loss drops the T-Birds to 3-6-0 (1-1-0 Summit), while NDSU moves to 4-6-2 (1-1-1 Summit).

"This was a tough loss to take," head coach Brian Stock said after the game.  "I think we played a better game, but all of the breaks seemed to go against us."

North Dakota State took full advantage of the breaks it had in the first half, scoring in the 4th minute on a Quin Ryan header and then again in the 30th minute on a penalty kick by Lorraine Thompson.

Southern Utah recorded a barrage of shots over a four-minute span between the 10th and 14th minute as two of the three shots from Erica Berlin were saved by NDSU keeper Kalani Bertsch.  Erin Marble also had a crack at the net in the 10th minute, but the shot was stopped by Bertsch for her second of seven saves on the day.

"We really didn't find our rhythm until the second half," Stock said of the final 45 minutes.  "We created some quality scoring opportunities, but their keeper kept them in the game."

Five of Southern Utah's eight shots in the second half were on goal, but none seemed to find the back of the net.  North Dakota State mustered only three shots in the half, with two in the first minute and one within 30 seconds of the game's final whistle.

The Thunderbirds will continue their first ever road trip to the Dakotas on Sunday when SUU plays at South Dakota State.  Kick-off for the for The Summit League game is scheduled at Noon.
