CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 31 - Southern Utah ended its regular season
with a 4-0 home loss against Oakland University on Friday afternoon.
The loss on Senior Day drops the Thunderbirds to 7-9-0 on the year and
4-4-0 in conference, while the Golden Grizzlies wrapped up The Summit
League regular-season title with a 7-1-0 mark and an 8-8-2 overall
record.
The two teams will meet again next weekend in the first round of The Summit League Soccer Championships. That game will take place in Macomb, Ill. with the T-Birds entering as the No. 4 seed and Oakland as the No. 1.
"That's not the result that we wanted today," head coach Brian Stock said. "I thought we played a lot better than a 4-0 decision, but you can't give a team like that too much respect. Our girls gave them too much of that today and they took care of their chances. We're hoping for a different level of play when we play them next weekend."
Oakland recorded two goals in each half, starting with Jessica Boyle in the 5th minute and Lindsey Blair in the 15th minute. Meghan Hartwig was credited with the assist on the first goal with Boyle credited with the assist on the second.
Hartwig then picked up her first goal of the contest in the 53rd minute as the collected a ball the SUU back line tried to clear and put it into the back of the net. Shannon Doyle punctuated the OU scoring with a goal in the 72nd minute off an assist by Sarah Lynch.
Seniors Kimly Anderson, Erica Berlin, Kelsey Buchanan, Sutton Fox and Shaley Ipson-Allen were each honored prior to the game as part of senior day activities. Their class represents the most wins over a four-year span than any other time in SUU soccer history. The group was also the only class to qualify for the postseason conference tournament each of its four years.
