FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Nov. 15 - Southern Utah sophomore Cameron Levins and freshman Jamie Smith continued to lead the Thunderbirds during the cross country season with top finishes as the pair collected all-region plaudits at the NCAA Mountain Regionals on Saturday.  As a team, the SUU men finished ninth of 15 teams while the women finished 14th of 18 teams.

The Thunderbird men were spread thin during the race with only five available runners as sophomore Graham Cheever did not make the trip to Colorado because of a blood clot.  Cheever suffered the injury after being struck by an ice block while training in Cedar City.  Freshman Nigel Sharp, who ran in the meet, also wasn't 100 percent as he was suffering from a stomach virus leading up to the race.

"I think our men ran great, considering all the things that went wrong going into the race," head coach Eric Houle said.  "Our men knew they had to be ready to run today and they did that.  Our women are young and that showed during the race today."

Levins ran the fastest time ever for a Thunderbird on the Fort Collins course, blazing to a 21st-place finish with a time of 30:17.8.  That time was a full five seconds faster than the time ran in 1999 by Curtis Moore, the year Southern Utah won the Mountain Regional.  The time also set a new school record in the 10k.

Smith's time of 21:21.5 also set a school record in the 6k as she finished 24th in the race.  It was the second time in as many weeks that Smith had broken the school record, after a record-setting finish at The Summit League Championships.  Smith crossed the line at Regionals as the fourth-best freshman in the region as fellow freshman Nate Jewkes finished as the second-best freshman in the region on the men's side with his 28th-place finish (30:33.0).  Jewkes' time ranks fifth all-time on the record books at SUU.

Southern Utah's men finished with a total of 229, three points outside of eight-place held by Weber State with 226.  SUU bested another in-state foe in WAC-champion Utah State that had accumulated 278 points, finishing tenth.

The women tallied 374 points for 14th place, finishing ahead of Montana, New Mexico State, Idaho State and Montana State.

Levins and Smith may be selected for an at-large berth into the NCAA National Championships in two weeks, but their spots will be contingent on how many teams are selected from the Mountain Region.  The selections for the national championships will be made later next week.
