Southern Utah Runs Winning Streak to Three Games with 3-1 Victory

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Sept. 27 - Southern Utah collected its third-straight victory with a 3-1 home win over Northern Colorado on Saturday afternoon.  The Thunderbirds move to 3-5-0 with the result, while the Bears drop to 5-7-0.

"This was not a pretty game today," head coach Brian Stock said.  "The flow of our game was very sporadic and we struggled to connect on our passes and struggled to find some pace.  However, we were able to find our spark in the second half and that really turned things around."

Northern Colorado held possession and maintained a strong offensive presence in the attacking third in the first half, accumulating ten shots to the Thunderbirds' six in the first 45 minutes.  Despite the disadvantage, Southern Utah put the first points on the board in the 5th minute as Erica Berlin beat UNC keeper Heidi Owen from seven-yards out on an entry pass from Laura Goodrich.

The Bears tied the game in the 18th minute as Kimmie Feidler took a pass from Jessica Zimmerman and played the ball to the far post, placing the ball just beyond a diving Sutton Fox.

The game remained 1-1 into the intermission and well into the second half, until Goodrich shot the ball on a sharp angle to the goal from six yards, finding the back of the net.  Freshman Stacey Brinkman played the ball into Goodrich on a blind back-heel touch to record the assist.

Southern Utah padded its lead with a third goal in the 84th minute as Shaley Ipson-Allen jumped and lifted her leg almost shoulder high and deflected Erin Marble's cross past the keeper inside the six-yard box.  The goal was Ipson-Allen's second goal of the weekend.

The Thunderbirds picked up the pace in the second half on both ends of the field, shutting out UNC during the final 45 minutes while collected 12 shots to the Bears' six.

SUU will be back in action next weekend on the road when the team continues conference play with Summit League matches at North Dakota State and South Dakota State on Friday and Sunday.
