PROVO, Utah, April 25 ? Southern Utah's
Matt McArthur shot 72 in the final round of BYU's Cougar Classic Saturday to hold on and win the tournament by one stroke over BYU's Brady Johnson and Travis Reid of New Mexico State McArthur, a senior from St. George, Utah, led the tournament wire-to-wire but his final round was just enough to give him the crown as Johnson shot 68 on his final trip around the par 72, 7,142-yard Riverside Country Club to pull within one. When it was all over McArthur was at 11-undr pare 205, while Johnson and Reid were one stroke back at 206.
Although he has finished second three times during his SUU career, the win was McArthur's first collegiate victory. He joins
Nate Page as Thunderbirds who have won tournaments this season, as Page finished first at UC Riverside's Braveheart Classic in March.
As a team SUU finished where it started the day, in sixth place, 24 shots off the pace of host BYU, which won the tourney at 22-under par 842. SUU shot 291 in the final round to finish at 2-over 866.
Tai Reynolds was second among Thunderbirds, in 25th at 3-over 219, while Pave was 34th (221),
Jeff Evans was 48th (224) and
Denny Job finished 70th (224).
Colorado State finished second at 851, followed by Idaho (854), New Mexico State and Boise State, tied in fourth at 856.
Utah (872) finished seventh, followed by Utah State (877), Weber State (880), Utah Valley (881), Air Force (885), Wyoming (894), Hawaii (903) and BYU-Hawaii (942).
