Cedar City, Utah – Aug. 28 – SUU's womens soccer team met the Bengals from Idaho State before a large, boisterous crowd on Friday.
After nearly 30 minutes
of posturing and exchange, the Thunderbirds struck first when at the 15:58 mark sophomore mid-fielder Riley Bassett scored a goal off an assist from Laura
Goodrich to give Southern Utah a 1-0 lead. Bassett led all players with four of
SUU's six shots.
The Bengal's Ashley Jones answered with a goal off a
direct free kick from AnnaMarie Hofstetter at the 29:39 mark, and the teams
entered intermission with a 1-1 tie.
The go-ahead goal came for the Bengals with 10
minutes remaining in the match.
Hofstetter blasted another free kick toward the Thunderbird goal, which
deflected off of an SUU defender and into the net. ISU held on for the 2-1
win.
The Bengals improved to 2-1-0. SUU dropped to 0-2-0.
The Thunderbirds next travel to Irvine, CA. for a
tournament with the Anteaters and UC-Riverside September 4-6. After a stop at Utah Valley on September
12, SUU returns home to meet Westminster College on Wednesday September 13, at
4:00pm.
