Southern Utah Falls 1-0 Against UC Riverside

IRVINE, Calif. - Sept. 4 - Southern Utah finished the final 45 minutes against UC Riverside by recording more shots than the Highlanders, but a first-half goal by UCR led to a 1-0 defeat for the Thunderbirds at the UC Irvine Invitational on Friday afternoon. The loss dropped the T-Birds to 0-3 on the year.

The game was a physical contest from start to finish as the teams combined for 18 fouls during the match. Each team was also awarded a yellow card during the 25th minute as a testament to the close play between the teams.

"This was one of the most physical games I have seen in the last couple of seasons," head coach Brian Stock said. "I thought we owned the first 15 minutes of the game and won the physical battle in the second half."

The Thunderbirds forced the first corner kick of the game close to the third minute, but it was UCR's Ashley Park that recorded the first and only goal of the game in the 21st minute.

The 1-0 score held throughout the rest of the first half as the Highlanders recorded nine shots to Southern Utah's three. The Thunderbirds turned the tables in the second half with four shots to UCR's three, with each shot within the first 16 minutes of the frame. Michelle Judd and Jessica Yukihiro led the T-Birds with two shots each.

Southern Utah will look to put the loss in the past and break into the win column when the Thunderbirds face UC-Irvine on Sunday afternoon.
