CEDAR CITY, Utah (Oct. 16,
2010) - The Southern Utah University women's soccer team dropped its Summit League match to
North Dakota State University 1-0 in double overtime at the Thunderbird Soccer
Field Saturday afternoon.
The Thunderbirds saw their record fall to
4-8-1 overall and 1-4 in Summit League play while the Bison improved to 8-4-4
overall and 3-2-1 in conference. SUU finished with an 8-6 advantage in shots.
Both teams turned in impressive defensive
performances, holding each other scoreless throughout regulation and the first
overtime session. SUU's best scoring chance came late in regulation as junior
forward McKenzie Hadley dribbled inside the NDSU box before slipping a pass to
redshirt-sophomore forward Stacey Brinkman who one-timed a shot that missed
just wide. The shot hit the side of the net to give the Thunderbirds and fans a
brief second of excitement only to see the ball on the right side of the goal
and the teams returning to play.
Neither team got a shot off in the first
overtime session as both defenses spoiled numerous offensive runs. Minutes into
the second overtime, the Bison, who finished with a 9-5 advantage in corner
kicks, made their final count as their corner kick went across the SUU box
before Brooklyn Dyce headed one towards the left post but had her shot blocked
by a Thunderbird defender. The ball stayed in the box and bounced right to
NDSU's Holly Christian who kicked in the match-winner in the 105th
minute.
Southern Utah redshirt-sophomore keeper
Charly Booth turned in another outstanding performance, making a number of
leaping grabs and big kicks to stop NDSU threats and get SUU on the attack.
Booth finished with one save while Kalani Bertsch made four saves for the
Bison.
The Thunderbirds take to the road next
weekend, traveling to face Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday
and then Centenary College in Shreveport, La. on Sunday.
