MACOMB, Ill. - The Southern Utah University women's soccer team played another tough,
physical and hard fought Summit League match but a last minute score by Western
Illinois University led to a 1-0 defeat Sunday afternoon.
The Thunderbirds record falls to 3-6-1
overall and 0-2 in conference after suffering back-to-back 1-0 defeats,
following Friday's Summit League opening defeat to IUPUI. Western Illinois
improved to 6-3-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
SUU held its own while playing a in road
match that featured 35 fouls before WIU scored with just over four minutes
remaining. A corner kick by the Leathernecks landed in the box and was headed
in by an WIU player at the 85:56 mark for the match's lone goal.
The Thunderbirds finished with nine shots, two
of which were on goal by sophomore forward Missy Lazcano and junior midfielder
Riley Bassett. Bassett's shot game at the end of regulation following her own
corner kick, her shot was headed towards the net but was saved by a WIU
defender to preserve the 1-0 win for the Leathernecks.
Redshirt-sophomore keeper Charly Booth
finished with five saves.
Southern Utah returns home to host UMKC for
its annual Breast Cancer Awareness match set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
