Thunderbirds Suffer Another Defeat on the Road

ROCHESTER, Michigan – The Oakland Golden Grizzlies took an early lead against the visiting Thunderbirds of Southern Utah on Sunday, and then never looked back en route to a 5-1 victory. Oakland displayed a well-balanced attack as four different players notched goals for the home team while four other Grizzlies tallied assists in the game.

Oakland recorded their first goal of the day just four minutes into the match when midfielder Nicole DeLuca sent a corner kick into the box where teammate Kara Weber got a head on the ball to score her first goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Grizzlies for the majority of the first half until senior Amy Trandell and sophomore Serena San Cartier tallied back-to-back goals in the final five minutes of the period to put Oakland up 3-0 at halftime.

After the break Oakland would pick up where it had left off as Meghan Reynolds found the back of the net from 17 yards out just minutes into the second half to extend the advantage to 4-0. Southern Utah eventually got on the board in the 65th minute when Missy Lazcano connected on a corner kick with junior forward Stacey Brinkman who was able to head one past the goalkeeper for her team best fifth goal this season. The Grizzlies would get the goal back just minutes later as San Cartier was able to tuck one in from close range for her second goal on the day and cement the 5-1 win for Oakland.

With Sunday's loss the Thunderbirds are now 0-6 in conference play and will finish their final year in the Summit League winless on the road. Southern Utah will return home this week where they will conclude the season with home contests against South Dakota on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and a special Senior Night on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in conjunction with their match against UMKC.
