Thunderbird Softball Drops Two on Day Two in Honolulu

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Feb. 11 - Southern Utah softball came up with a pair of losses on the second day of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic as the Thunderbirds dropped decisions of 4-2 to UC Davis and 9-0 to Texas State.  The losses drop the T-Birds to 0-3 on the year with two more games up for the team tomorrow on the campus of the University of Hawaii.

In the first game of the day, Southern Utah had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 over UC Davis before a two-run home run in the fifth inning gave the Aggies the lead for good.

The Thunderbirds opened the scoring on the day with an RBI single by Nicole Huntsman in the bottom of the second inning.  Back-to-back throwing errors by the T-Birds in the top of the third led to a tying run for the Aggies, but an RBI single by Darleen Fernandez in the bottom of the frame put SUU back up 2-1.

The two-run home run for the Aggies in the fifth came with two outs on the scoreboard, with UC Davis adding a fourth run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single.

Fernandez led SUU at the plate with two hits on three at bats with Danielle Axe suffering the loss in the circle after allowing the four runs (two earned) with four walks and three strikeouts.

Southern Utah could never find its hitting groove in the second game of the afternoon, falling to Texas State in six innings, 9-0.  Junior transfer Heather Gardner recorded SUU's lone hit of the second contest in a game that was played in rain from start to finish with the clouds opening up in the top of the fifth inning and causing a 22-minute rain delay.

The Thunderbirds will play its final two games of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, beginning with a rematch with the University of Hawaii tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. (MT)
