SUU Softball Drops 6-1 Decision on Final Day in New Mexico

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Feb. 20 - Home runs came back to haunt the Thunderbirds on the final day of the Troy Cox Classic as a pair of two-run home runs for New Mexico State led to a 6-1 defeat for Southern Utah.  The loss drops the team to 3-7 on the year with games against Tennessee and UNLV slated for Tuesday afternoon.

SUU had the first lead of the game for the third consecutive contest as an RBI double off the bat of Haylee Hoch in the bottom of the second inning gave the T-Birds a 1-0 advantage.  Ariel Morbeck scored the run on the play, having reached first base on a fielder's choice.

Southern Utah's lead lasted through the top of the fifth, but it was then that the Aggies scored four runs on an RBI double, illegal pitch and two-run home run over the left field fence.  NMSU added two more runs in the top of the sixth on a second two-run home run for the eventual 6-1 outcome.

Thunderbird starter Danielle Axe was given the loss in 5.1 innings where she allowed six runs (all earned) on seven hits and six walks.

Southern Utah will return to action on Tuesday with a pair of games in Las Vegas.  The Thunderbirds are slated to face the University of Tennessee and UNLV in the two-game set with the first game beginning at 2:00 p.m. (MT).
