CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University softball will return to the diamond this weekend when the team travels to Boise, Idaho to face the Boise State Broncos and Seattle Redhawks in a three-team tournament.
The Thunderbirds will enter the weekend with an overall record of 3-9 with victories over Texas State, Louisiana-Monroe and Sam Houston State. SUU will look to snap out of a recent three-game losing streak with losses against New Mexico State, Tennessee and UNLV.
Offensively, Southern Utah has been led by Heather Richardson who has tallied a .306 average while also leading the team in hits (11) and total bases (15). Darleen Fernandez leads the team with two home runs during the year while also recording a team-best six RBI. Overall, the Thunderbirds are carrying a .221 average with ten doubles, one triple and four home runs.
Heather Black has led the SUU pitching staff with 39.0 innings pitched in nine appearances with racking up 23 strikeouts. As a team, Southern Utah carries a 5.69 ERA with 37 strikeouts.
SUU is slated to face Boise State in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon, beginning at 2:00 p.m. with games against Seattle and Boise State scheduled on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively. The Thunderbirds will wrap up the tournament with a game against Seattle University on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. Live stats for all of the games is anticipated to be available online at www.suutbirds.com.
