Three Home Runs Power Thunderbirds to Victory over Seattle, 8-7

BOISE, Idaho - March 6 - Southern Utah University softball used three home runs to post an 8-7 victory over the Seattle University Redhawks on Sunday with four runs coming over the final two innings.  The victory improves the T-Birds to 5-12 overall on the season with conference play set to begin this weekend.

Seattle jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but a two-run home run by Haylee Hoch in the top of the second inning for SUU trimmed the margin to 4-2.

Two more runs crossed the plate for the Redhawks in the bottom of the second inning, but a second two-run big fly over the wall for SUU in the top of the third inning kept the score close, 6-4.  Nicole Huntsman tallied the T-Bird home run in the third, scoring Hoch who had reached base on a two-out single.

Seattle scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single and it wasn't until the top of the seventh inning that Southern Utah would begin its comeback.  Madison Resley began the charge with the Thunderbirds' third two-run home run of the day and Stephanie DeJesus capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI single, scoring Cora Cordova from third.

The three-run frame tied the game at 7-7 and sent the contest into extra innings.  With tournament rules in place, Aly Daniels began the eighth on second base and scored on a two-out, RBI single off the bat of Resley.  Bubba Kearns wrapped up her first victory of the season in the circle by inducing a pair of ground balls bookending a putout by Darleen Fernandez at third.

Southern Utah will host its first home games of the season this week, welcoming the University of Utah and IPFW to Cedar City.  The Thunderbirds will play the Utes in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon with a three-game set scheduled with the Mastodons on Friday and Saturday.
