Southern Utah Falls in Doubleheader at Weber State

OGDEN, Utah - April 27 - Southern Utah wasn't able to overcome costly errors in the field and home runs by Weber State, falling to the Wildcats in a doubleheader on Wednesday, 7-4 and 12-4. The losses drop the T-Birds to 22-27 overall on the year and 3-9 against in-state opponents.

In game 1, Weber State opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as an errant pick-off attempt from the catcher sailed into left field, scoring a runner from third. Southern Utah answered in the top of the next inning and took the lead on a two-run single off the bat of Aly Daniels, scoring Cora Cordova and Brittany Henderson.

The Wildcats made the most of another Thunderbird error in the bottom of the frame, as a ball from third base was thrown beyond first and ended up running all the way out into right field allowing the single to turn into a three-base error and a run for Weber. The lead shifted right back to the side of SUU in the top of the fourth as a pair of singles to begin the frame led to a pair of runs on a ground ball RBI and a wild pitch, making the score 4-2.

Southern Utah looked like it would dodge a bullet in the bottom of the sixth inning as T-Bird stater, Heather Black, struck out a batter to induce the second out of the frame with the bases loaded. However, Weber State came back during the next at bat and drove a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield fence and tallied a second consecutive home run to take a 7-4 lead into the final inning.

SUU recorded a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, but were then retired in order with the Wildcats taking the first game, 7-4.

In game 2, Weber State got out quickly scoring six runs in the home half of the first to take an early 6-0 lead. Southern Utah threatened in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with two outs on the board. However, the chance was put to an end on an inning-ending ground ball to keep the T-Birds scoreless. Following a run by Weber State in the bottom of the second, SUU broke through with a run of its own on a solo home run placed over the left field fence by Heather Richardson.

Southern Utah continued to chip away at the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Terysa Dyer and a bases loaded walk drawn by Richardson. The T-Birds had a game-tying opportunity with the bases loaded and Madison Resley at the plate, but a sky-high fly ball ended the frame. The bases were full of 'Birds again in the fifth, but only one run crossed the plate for SUU in the frame as Aly Daniels tallied a sacrifice fly to score Kadi Henderson from third.

Meanwhile, Thunderbird runs were answered by the Wildcats in the final three innings as WSU tallied a run in the fourth and fifth and finished the game with a walk-off, three-run home run to seal the victory, 12-4.

Southern Utah will look to put the losses in the rearview mirror with the team now turning its focus to a three-game Summit League stand against North Dakota State on Friday and Saturday. The Thunderbirds will host the Bison in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m. with the series finale set for Saturday at Noon.
