Southern Utah Softball Drops Two at BYU

PROVO, Utah - April 6 - Southern Utah University softball's seven-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday night as the Thunderbirds dropped decisions of 3-1 and 10-4 to Brigham Young University.  The losses put the T-Birds with an overall record of 16-20 on the year.

BYU scored the first run in game one as the SUU outfield misplayed a ball to left, allowing the Cougars to score from second.  A second run crossed the plate during the play, but the ball rolled into the bullpen and out of play during the error, keeping runners at second and third.

Southern Utah tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases with only one out on the board.  Haylee Hoch then came to the plate and drilled a single to right field to tally the RBI.  A second run crossed the plate as Madison Resley came to the plate and was hit, allowing Aly Daniels to score from third base.  However, the run was disallowed on a substitution infraction as Resley was not re-entered prior to her at bat resulting in the final out of the frame.

The contest went into extra innings as the game remained tied through the seventh inning, but a two-run, walk-off home run by BYU ended the game, 3-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In game two, Southern Utah put the first lights on the board as Resley dropped a three-run home run over the fence in centerfield to give the Thunderbirds a 3-0 lead.  However, runs by the Cougars in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth put Brigham Young up 10-3 going into the seventh inning.

Southern Utah punctuated its runs in the top of the seventh as freshman Terysa Dyer led off the inning with a home run in her first collegiate at bat.  The home run put the final score at 10-4 as the T-Birds finished the inning with two ground balls and a strikeout.

SUU will look to rebound from the losses and turn its attention to its three-game conference slate at South Dakota State this weekend.  Game times in Brookings are set for a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with the series finale on Saturday at Noon.
