Two Losses at Summit League Tournament Punctuates SUU Softball Season

MACOMB, Ill. - May 13 - Southern Utah University softball suffered defeats of 8-0 to North Dakota State in the first game of the day and then was eliminated from the Summit League Tournament with a narrow 4-3 defeat to UMKC.  The losses end the Thunderbirds' season with a final record of 25-34.

SUU was only able to muster a single hit in the first game with North Dakota State as both teams were held scoreless through the first five innings.  Bison bats then came alive with five hits in the sixth inning, turning the knocks into six runs along with a pair of Thunderbird errors.  Two more runs crossed the plate for NDSU in the seventh on a pair of hits and three base on balls.

In the afternoon, Southern Utah and UMKC met for the second time in the tournament after SUU took the first game 1-0 in the opening round.  The two teams matched runs in the opening inning of the second game with the Kangaroos scoring first with a run on a T-Bird error and Southern Utah answering with an RBI triple by Aly Daniels in the home half of the frame.

UMKC then took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the second before a solo home run by Madison Resley in the bottom of the inning trimmed the margin to 4-2.  Southern Utah benefitted on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to bring the difference to one run, 4-3.  The T-Birds put a victory within reach in the fifth with runners on second and third with only one out, but couldn't find the scoring hit.  Southern Utah had two runners on the base paths again in the sixth inning with 'Birds on first and second with one out, but were once again kept scoreless in the frame.

In all, Southern Utah left ten runners on base during the contest with the score of 4-3 holding through the final out.
