Two Home Runs Not Enough as SUU Softball Falls at UMKC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - May 6 - Darleen Fernandez and Kadi Henderson went yard for Southern Utah, but the home runs were matched by UMKC with runners on base, leading to a 7-2 Thunderbird loss in Kansas City on Friday afternoon.  The loss drops the T-Birds to 24-29 overall on the year and 14-8 in league play.

The Kangaroos opened the scoring with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the first inning and added a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to take a 6-0 lead.  Southern Utah broke through with its first run in the top of the fourth on Fernandez' league-leading 11th home run of the year.

However, the run was echoed with an RBI single by UMKC in the home half of the inning to keep the margin at six, 7-1.  Another solo shot by Southern Utah over the fences, this time off the bat of K. Henderson in the seventh inning punctuated the scoring in the game, 7-2.

SUU struggled to break through against UMKC starter Deanna Friese, striking out on 14 occasions and being held to four hits during the day.

The two teams will return to the diamond tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to wrap up the three-game series.  First pitch for the opening game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (MT) with fans able to follow the game online with live stats on www.suutbirds.com.
