Women's Golf Travels to Circling Raven Invitational

CEDAR CITY, Utah, Sept. 8 – Southern Utah's women's golf team plays the second event of its fall season next week when the team travels to Worley, Idaho, to compete in Gonzaga's Circling Raven Invitational. The tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday at the par 72, 6,111-yard Circling Raven Golf Course.

    Scheduled to compete for the Thunderbirds are senior Kacy Buckner, sophomore Kaohi Loo, freshmen Monica Jung and Alyssa Ballew, and either junior Jamie Coking or junior Brittany Edwards filling the final spot.

    Teams scheduled to compete at the tournament include SUU, Boise State, British Columbia, BYU, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Eastern Washington, Hawai'i, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Francisco, Samford, Seattle, UC Riverside, Utah Valley, Washington State, Weber State, Xavier and host Gonzaga.

    Palmer to Redshirt in 2011-12: Southern Utah senior Sadie Palmer has opted to spend this season as a redshirt. She will have one year of eligibility next season when the Thunderbirds join the Big Sky Conference.
   
    Last Year at The Circling Raven Invitational: Southern Utah's Sadie Palmer shot a final-round 78to finish at 227 and tied for 14th place, leading SUU to an 18th place finish at 960, 55 shots off the pace of team champion Northern Arizona. Palmer slipped three spots after entering the final round in 11th place, while the SUU team fell one spot. The Thunderbirds started the tournament with a round of 312 that had them tied for 13th place but a second-round 323 dropped them to 17th and a 325 in the final round allowed Seattle University to jump ahead into 17th. Jamie Coking finished second among Thunderbirds, in 74th place at 241 after shooting a final-round 81 (80-78-81), while Kacy Buckner was 79th at 243 (81-82-80), Brittany Edwards was 96th at 250 (79-86-85) and Kaohi Loo finished 100th at 253 (83-86-84).

    The Coach: Richard Church (Utah '89) is in his 12th season as head golf coach and his 17th on the staff at Southern Utah. Prior to taking over the program from former Coach John Evans, Church spent four seasons as the Thunderbirds' assistant coach. During his tenure on the SUU staff, Church has coached five academic all-Americans, one Mid-Continent Conference medalist, two Mid-Con runner-ups and the University's first NCAA post-season competitor in golf. He has also seen the team finish second in the league five times since SUU began competing in the Mid-Con in 1997-98.

    Last Time Out: Southern Utah freshman Monica Jung shot 2-under par 70 to finish two strokes ahead of Weber State's Amanda Snyder to claim the individual championship at Weber State's Wildcat Invitational Friday, leading the Thunderbirds to a second-place finish at the tournament. Jung led wire-t0-wire, shooting 34 on the front nine at the par 71, 5,923-yard Davis Park course, to give her a one-stroke lead over Snyder, then coming home with a 36 to Snyder's 37 for the 2-shot win. Senior Kacy Buckner finished second among Thunderbirds, in 10th at 79, with freshman Alyssa Ballew 1th at 82, sophomore Kaohi Loo 21st at 84 and freshman Shantell Spackman 27th at 89. Sophomore Rose Pelletier shot 83 to finish 18th competing as an individual.
