SUU Falls to Sacramento State

CEDAR CITY, Utah, 10/5/12 – Southern Utah struck first with a goal from senior midfielder Morgan Bridge to jump out to a 1-0 lead against Sacramento State on Friday. The Hornets would quickly level the score and then add two more goals to finally take a 3-1 win behind a pair of goals from freshman Alyssa Anderson tallied a pair of goals.

The two teams went back and forth early on with neither side being able to break through until the SUU offense advanced the ball to the attacking third in the 18th minute. From there Thunderbird freshman Savannah Spere sent a pass into the box where Bridge used a header to direct the ball into the back of the net and put Southern Utah out in front 1-0.

“That was a nice goal by Mo,” commented SUU head coach Becky Hogan. “That's her forte, scoring with her head.”

Just over two minutes passed before the Hornets were able to come up with an equalizer. The score came as Anderson took a pass from teammate Jordan Carlberg near the left hand side of the box and fired a shot over SUU goalkeeper Charly Booth to level the score at a goal apiece. Anderson then struck again from the same area in the twenty-fourth minute to give the Hornets a 2-1 advantage.

Southern Utah battled in attempt to get back the goal, but was unable to convert its chances to pull the score even. Freshman Kaleigh Bosen was able to put a shot on frame in the second half, but the Hornet goalkeeper was there to make the stop. Bridge then had another look at the net but her attempt flew just over the crossbar.

“I felt like we played great soccer and we had a couple of point-blank shots,” explained Hogan. “We just need to put the ball in the net.”

Sacramento State eventually added another goal in the sixty-seventh minute to seal the 3-1 victory. It would be Anderson on the passing end this time as she connected with Victoria Ramirez who put the ball into the net from just a few yards out in front of the goal.

Bridge's header gave the senior midfielder her second goal of the year and first in conference play. Anderson picked up her second and third goals this season while Ramirez' score put her into the team lead with four. The Hornets held a 17-12 advantage in shots but SUU took five corner kicks and gave up just two.

The loss drops the Thunderbirds to 0-4-0 in Big Sky games and 1-8-1 overall. Sacramento State improves to 5-5-3 on the year with a 3-1-1 mark in league contests.

Southern Utah will be back in action this Sunday as it prepares to host Portland State. The match between the Thunderbirds and Vikings will start at 10:00 a.m.
