Portland State Takes 3-0 Win Over SUU

CEDAR CITY, Utah, 10/7/12 – Southern Utah dropped a 3-0 decision to Portland State at home Sunday morning to fall to 0-5-0 in the Big Sky this season as well as 1-9-1 overall. The win helped the Vikings stay near the top of the conference standings with a record of 4-1-1 and improve to 6-6-2 for the year.

“This is an emotional team, which can be great,” explained SUU head coach Becky Hogan, “but when we get in the wrong mindset after we give up a goal, and start to think that we aren't good, it affects our play.”

The Thunderbirds fell behind in the twenty-fourth minute after giving up a goal on a PSU corner kick. Viking midfielder Amanda Dutra sent the ball into the box where freshman Torie Morris was able use a header to redirect it into the back of the net. The score put the visitors up 1-0, which would remain the count at halftime.

Portland State withstood the Thunderbird attack early in the second period and was able to extend its lead in the fifty-third minute as Megan Martin connected with teammate Cori Bianchini for a goal from the right side of the box. A few minutes later Dutra tallied her second assist as she found freshman forward Lynsey Gaines open for a third score to set the final count at 3-0.

The Thunderbirds put eight shots on frame in the contest, their second highest total of the year, but were unable to notch a goal for the sixth time this season. Portland State held a 21-11 shooting edge over SUU in the match.

Gaines and Marin each had four shots for the Vikings while Stacey Brinkman led Southern Utah with three tries. Charly Booth made seven saves in goal for the T-Birds and Lainey Hulsizer and Caitlin Plece each recorded four stops after splitting time in the net for Portland State.

The referee also handed out four yellow cards in the match, as Carlie and Megan Martin were both cautioned
for Portland State along with Sabrina Hernandez and Kaleigh Bosen of Southern Utah.

“I still believe that we are as good as anybody, I have never waivered in the idea that we are one of the better teams in this conference and can win any day,” stated Hogan. “Everyone I have talked to sees the improvement in this team and we will continue to work to get better. There are still a lot of games left to play.”

SUU now prepares for its final road trip of the season with visits scheduled to Northern Colorado and North Dakota next week. The Thunderbirds will square off against the Bears on Friday at 7 p.m. before meeting up with UND on Sunday at noon.
