SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Mar. 17 - The Thunderbirds were rained out of several events while competing at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational. Inclement weather forced the cancellation of the remaining events on Saturday.
"It was still a good weekend for us," head coach Eric Houle said. "It's good to get the athletes out of snowy Cedar City and we were able to record some good performances."
The women's distance squad was able to race in the 1,500-meters and 5,000-meters before the rain ended the meet. Jamie Smith recorded a fourth-place Southern Utah record with a fourth-place time of 17:01.45 in the 1,500-meters. She was followed closely by Sylvia Bedford in fifth place. Bedford's time of 17:06.10 ranks seventh in the school records.
Diana Medina led the women in the 1,500-meters with a seventh-place time of 4:34.42. Smith (4:41.20) and Kaylee Coates (4:45.64) finished next for the T-Birds, placing 20th and 23rd respectively.
Clinton Rhoton led the men in the 5,000-meters, finishing second in 14:44.83 while Devan Antczak improved his ninth-place SUU record with a first-place time of 9:22.82 in the steeplechase.
Austin West led the men in the 1,500-meters with a third-place time of 4:00.53. West finished one position behind Summit League competitor Travis Fitzke of North Dakota State (3:58.16). Nigel Sharp (4:03.65) and Dallas Eborn (4:03.78) crossed the finish line next for the Thunderbirds, placing seventh and eighth respectively.
Thrower Kayla Kovar recorded a personal best of 183-5 in the hammer throw, placing second at the meet and ranking fourth in SUU history. Kristen Nielson led the sprinters with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash and a time of 13.30.
Wade Nielson led the team in the multi events, placing sixth in the decathlon with a score of 6111 while Kyle Kopp recorded a 22-3 in the long jump, placing fourth for the T-Birds.
The Thunderbirds will now take a two-week break from comptition as Southern Utah prepares to host the first of three home meets, the SUU/NAU Dual. The dual will take place at the Eccels Coliseum on Mar. 31 and is set to begin at 1 p.m.
