CEDAR CITY, Utah – Apr. 7 –
Southern Utah Track & Field returns from a successful weekend at Stanford,
San Francisco State and Arizona State as school records and personal records
fell at the hands of the Thunderbirds.
“The performances this
weekend are exactly what we hoped for,” head coach Eric Houle said. “The sheer
number of athletes performing at this level is very exciting as a coach.”
Cameron Levins led the
T-Birds on a national stage at the Stanford Invitational, finishing 15th in the
1,500-meter run with a time of 3:42.61. Levins' time improves his previous
school record of 3:45.38, set in 2011 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite. Austin West
also raced in the 1,500-meters and finished with a time of 3:52.95, ranking
seventh in SUU's records.
The women also broke into the
school records at Stanford, led by Danielle West-Jewkes and Diana
Medina-Mitchell in the 1,500-meters. West-Jewkes set a personal record in with
a time of 4:31.95 and currently ranks fifth in the school records, while Medina
recorded a 4:31.69 finish. Medina also raced in the 5,000-meter run and
recorded a finish of 16:36.87. Jamie Smith's 16:41.19 finish in the
5,000-meters ranks third in the school records, while Sylvia Bedford's finish
of 16:56.05 ranks fifth.
Devan Antczak led the men at
the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, leading the field with a first-place
finish in the steeplechase. Antczak's time of 9:08.02 ranks fourth in Southern
Utah's records. Kaylee Coates led the women with a second-place overall finish
in the 800-meter dash, breaking into the school's top ten with a 2:13.49 time.
The sprinters, throwers and
jumpers spent the weekend competing at Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic.
Preston Myers led in the men's sprints, racing to a first-place finish in the
200-meter dash with a time of 22.09. Myers also raced in the 100-meters,
finishing tenth with a 11.00 time. Jasmine Paicely Mullins led on the women's
side, finishing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and seventh in the 100-meter
dash with respective times of 14.06 and 12.28.
Kayla Kovar and Cody Olsen
led the T-Birds in the throws, as Kovar finished sixth in the discus throw with
a mark of 152-7 and Olsen finished sixth in the javelin with a mark of 206-3.
Wade Nielson finished first for Southern Utah in the jumps, placing seventh in
the high jump with a height of 6-8.75.
The T-Birds will be on the
road again next weekend, when the team travels to Pomona, Calif., for the
Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Apr. 14.
