CEDAR CITY, Utah - Aug. 31 -
Southern Utah Track & Field has signed 13 new
student-athletes who will join the Thunderbird ranks as the teams enter the Big Sky
Conference in the 2012-13 season.
The men's distance program
increases by three as Ibrahim Ahmed (St. Catharines, Ontario), Tyson Boyer
(Pine View), and Mack Morrison (American Fork) join the team. Ahmed is the
younger brother of 2012 Canadian Olympian and three-time All-American Mohammed
Ahmed, while Boyer earned the Region IX title in the two-mile run with a time
of 9:47.90.
Morrison currently holds the
state cross country title with a 15:22.4 finish in the three-mile run, as well
as a first-place steeplechase time of 6:14.06 at the Great Southwest Classic.
Tyson Boyer's sister Kaylee
(Pine View) also joins the T-Bird ranks as she signs with the women's distance
squad, bringing personal bests of 5:16 in the mile and 11:14 in the two-mile.
Like her brother, Kaylee Boyer also holds the Region IX title in the two-mile
with her 11:45.60 finish. The women also welcome Josie Brandow (Lone Peak) to
the distance team as she bring personal records of 5:16, 11:22 and 18:58 in the
mile, two-mile and 5,000-meter run respectively.
The throws team will
increase by three as Jayson Kovar (Ridgecrest, Calif.) and Grant Evans
(Springville) join the men and Madison Summers (Weber) joins the women. Kovar
is the younger brother of junior thrower Kayla Kovar and finished third and
seventh in the discus and shot put in California and holds personal best marks
of 207 in the discus and 62 in the shot put.
Evans brings a 4A state
champion title in the shot put with a personal best mark of 54-11, while
Summers was the women's 5A state runner-up in the javelin with a personal best
mark of 125.
The sprinters welcome one
new signee to the men's team as Arnold Carrillo (Reno, Nev.) joins the
Thunderbirds, bringing a top state time of 47.4 in the 400-meters and personal
best of 22.1 in the 200-meters.
T'Keyah Johnson (Hunter),
Haley Harris (Reno, Nev.) and Letangie Richard (Las Vegas, Nev.) have committed
to join the women's sprint team this season. Johnson brings a fourth-place
100-meter finish at the 5A state championship, recording a time of 12.41, as
well as a personal best of 12.3 in the 100-meters and 25.5 in the 200-meters,
while Harris holds personal records of 12.97 in the 100-meters and 25.6 in the
200-meters.
Richard brings a 100-meter
personal best of 12.2 to the team and will also compete as a jumper, holding a
long jump best of 18-4. Taylir Garrison (American Fork) also joins the women's
jumps team, having leapt to a second-place mark of 5-3 in the high jump at the
5A state championship. Garrison holds a personal best mark of 5-6 in the high
jump.
