Thunderbirds Edged at Weber State

OGDEN, Utah, 9/30/12 – Southern Utah was once again edged in a defensive battle as it fell by a final score of 1-0 at Weber State on Sunday. The loss drops the Thunderbirds to 0-3-0 in Big Sky contests and 1-7-1 for the year. Of those seven losses, five have been decided by a single goal. The win for the Wildcats helps them improve to 4-9-0 this season with a 2-2-0 mark in conference play.

"Our team is, inch by inch, becoming better,” commented SUU head coach Becky Hogan. “Our strength coach, Mike Cazayoux, is always telling the players 'we gotta get better today' and I think that most days we do.”

The Thunderbirds had a chance to get on the board first in the game as senior forward Stacey Brinkman put a shot on frame in the thirty-sixth minute. The try would be stopped by Weber State goalkeeper Ryann Waldman however who went on to hold a clean sheet through the full 90 minutes of play.

The SUU defense held strong throughout the opening period, keeping the Wildcats scoreless on 12 shots. The Thunderbirds would have four shots in the frame.

Weber State was finally able to notch the match's opening goal in the fifty-second minute. An SUU foul early in the second half would give the Wildcats a free kick in Thunderbird territory where freshman midfielder Chansi Crompton played a cross into the box to teammate Brecken Holbrook. The freshman defender was able to control the ball and send it into the back of the net to put her team out in front 1-0.

Minutes later Madison Wood had a chance an equalizer for the Thunderbirds but Waldman was once again there for the save. Brinkman put another shot on frame in the seventy-fifth minute but one last save helped the Wildcats hold on for the 1-0 victory.

Southern Utah finished the match with seven shots, led by Brinkman who recorded three tries. Weber State was led by Makenzie Harrison with four shots and had 24 as a team.

“We still have a long ways to go and our team is going to continue to march down the path towards being the best team possible,” stated Hogan.  “I have the upmost confidence in our players, our staff, and the auxiliary personnel who assist us."

The Thunderbirds will be back in Cedar City next week for their first Big Sky home games. SUU will host Sacramento State this Friday at 4 p.m. then round out the weekend against Portland State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
