SUU Edged by UT Arlington

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Mar. 14 – Southern Utah (6-18) finished a stretch of nine games in six days with a 1-0 defeat to UT Arlington (13-8) on Thursday. The Thunderbirds were held scoreless for the sixth time this season while the Mavs grabbed the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to come away with the win.

The contest proved to be an even matchup as both times recorded four hits while getting strong performances from their starting pitchers. Senior Teri Lyles (12-2) was credited with the win after tossing a complete game shutout for UTA. Ariel Zimmerman (3-10) also went the distance in the circle for SUU, allowing just one earned run while striking out four batters.

Both sides played through four-and-a-half scoreless innings before Britnea Barilli drove in the game's only run to put her team out in front and the Mavs eventually held on for the 1-0 win.

Junior infielder Kadi Henderson went 2-2 at the plate for Southern Utah while Kelli Hales and Ariel Morbeck added the other two hits on the day for the T-Birds.

The Thunderbirds will now have a week to prepare for their first Big Sky outing before visiting Portland State for a series scheduled to begin on March 22. The two teams will meet in a doubleheader on Friday at 3:00 p.m. (MT), then wrap things up with a single game on Saturday at one o'clock.
