Thunderbird Soccer Remains Undefeated with 2-2 Draw

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's soccer scored goals, but a pair of defensive miscues by the Thunderbirds allowed the University of Idaho to equalize as the two teams battled to a 2-2 draw on Friday afternoon. The result keeps both teams undefeated in the Big Sky with matching 2-0-1 records.

"We just seem to be our own worst enemy," head coach Becky Hogan said after the game. "We just didn't play at our best today and we need to find a way to get a win when we are having an off day."

The Vandals had the first real attempt of the afternoon in the 10th minute as Bret Baysinger's shot was saved by Taylor Bolding, one of two saves for the sophomore during the game. The half was then all Thunderbirds from there as SUU ripped eight shots, but just couldn't find the back of the net as the teams went into the break tied at 0-0.

Southern Utah broke the deadlock in the 56th minute as a service from Christine Meehan was misplayed by the Idaho keeper and found Aurora Moberly's boot inside the 6-yard box for the easy goal. It was answered minutes later when a late tackle by an SUU defender led to a Vandal penalty kick and Elexis Schlossarek slotted the ball into the lower left corner to tie the game at 1-1.

The Thunderbirds went back on top in the 70th minute as Jessica French powered a free kick to the left side where Nancy Birch placed a cross into the box, finding Annabelle Schwab who tucked away her first goal of the season and put SUU up 2-1.

Idaho equalized five minutes later as Bolding rushed to meet a ball, but misplayed it inside the 18-yard box and then was unable to push UI's Chloe Bell off of it and the Vandals tied the game 2-2.

The score remained tied throughout the rest of regulation and through overtime with the teams settling for the one point in conference play. Southern Utah moved to 5-3-2 with the results while Idaho moved to 2-9-1. The Thunderbirds will be back in action next weekend when SUU travels to face Northern Colorado and North Dakota on Friday and Sunday.
