RIVERSIDE, California - Southern Utah University cross country completed their second race of the season Saturday morning, competing at the UC Riverside Invitational. The Thunderbird men finished a close second, falling behind Minnesota by only five points, with the women finishing sixth in a field of 23.
The SUU men, racing in the invitational 8k, kept a close pack throughout the race with Nate Jewkes finishing third overall with a time of 24:07, fourth-best on the SUU record books on the UCR course. Hayden Hawks finished closely behind with a sixth-place finishing time of 24:17. Ibrahim Ahmed (24:29), Clinton Rhoton (24:36), Mike Tate (24:37) and Istvan Szogi (24:39) came in as a pack, taking up places 12 through 15. Shinano Miyazawa and Dylan Marx rounded out the team finishes, crossing the line in 26th and 57th with times of 24:54 and 25:32, respectively.
The men's effort earned them 48 points, placing the team only five points behind Minnesota with a score of 43.
The men's open 8k race featured five Thunderbirds with Skyler Riggs earning a second-place finish with a time of 25:23. He was followed by Omar Cortes (26:20) and Robby Lee (26:58) placing 11th and 23rd, respectively. Eric Sandall (27:13) and Collin Arave (27:59) were the final competitors for the Thunderbirds with 35th- and 71st-place finishes.
The women's 6k was led by Ashley Hawks for the Thunderbirds as the junior finished sixth overall with a time of 21:15, marking the seventh-fastest time in school history on the course. She was followed by Josie Brandow in 34th place with a time of 22:02. Aubrey Bryson (22:14) and Angie Nickerson (22:24) finished next for the T-birds, placing 40th and 48th. Jasmyn Hildebrandt (22:33), Sierra Malm (22:34) and Ashley Tyndall (22:36) finished next with 61st-, 63rd- and 65th-place respective finishes. Sharlie Dimick (22:49) and Regan Pond (23:29) rounded out the women's results with 83rd- and 117th-place finishes.
The women's open 5k race featured three Thunderbirds with Paige Cardiff finishing 24th with a time of 19:05. Kaylee Boyer (19:15) and Sheri Adair (20:20) followed with 31st- and 101st-place finishes.
The Utah Valley University women earned a first-place title with a score of 95. UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, San Diego State, and UC San Diego followed with scores of 113, 129, 135, and 145. The SUU women followed with a sixth-place finish with a team score of 187.
The Thunderbirds will prepare to race again at UNLV next weekend.
