CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University men's golf will continue its Fall season this Saturday and Sunday when the Thunderbirds compete at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.

SUU will enter the weekend coming off a third-place finish earlier in the week at the Battle in the Tetons. Freshman Fidel Concepcion, playing in his first collegiate competition, finished first at the tournament with a 7-under 209.

Player of the Week

The Big Sky Conference named Concepcion the Men's Golfer of the Week (Week 1) for his performance.

The Course

The Coach

Richard Church (Utah '89) is in his 15th season as head golf coach and his 20th on the staff at Southern Utah. Prior to taking over the program from former Coach John Evans, Church spent four seasons as the Thunderbirds' assistant coach. During his tenure on the SUU staff, Church has coached five academic all-Americans, one Mid-Continent Conference medalist, two Mid-Con runner-ups and the University's only two NCAA post-season competitors in golf. He is the only women's golf coach in SUU history.

Last Time at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sept. 9, 2013 – Southern Utah's men's golf team fired its third round of 292 in as many rounds Tuesday to finish eighth at Air Force's 16-team Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. Jake Holt and Tim Leonard finished tied for 16th to lead the Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds turned in a score of 12-over par 876, five shots behind Utah and 27 off the pace of host Air Force, which won the tournament running away with a score of 15-under par 849. Texas-El Paso was the only other team under par, in second place at 3-under 861, while Colorado and Wyoming finished tied for third at 867. New Mexico State was sixth at 870.

SUU finished nine shots ahead of ninth-place Utah State and Missouri-Kansas City (885), with Northern Colorado finishing 11th at 887. Colorado State and Air Force's JV team finished tied for 12th at 888, followed by Maryland (891), Wichita State (900) and Weber State (912).

Holt shot 73 in the final round while Leonard shot 74 to finish at 1-over par 217. Sammy Cole had the best round by a Thunderbird Monday as he fired a 72 to finish 48th at 224, with Nic Booth 52nd at 225 and Jameson Keiley 56th another stroke back. SUU's Braxton Williams, playing as an individual, finished 88th at 247.
