UTEP Holds Off Southern Utah, 4-2

EL PASO, Texas, Sept. 5 - Southern Utah fell in its second road
contest of the season on Friday as the Thunderbirds surrendered a 4-2
decision at UTEP. The Miners put up the first three goals of the night
before withstanding an attempted SUU rally to remain undefeated on the
year with a record of 5-0-1 while the T-Birds go to 1-2-1.

"We showed some great grit and determination to turn it around in the
second half and dominate play," stated SUU head coach Becky Hogan,
"but we need to figure out how to play better from the start of the
game."

UTEP was able to claim an early advantage on an SUU own goal in the
opening minutes, then increased its lead with a score from Aleah Davis
in the 27th. Taylor Kidd found the back of the net late in the half to
make the count 3-0 in favor of the Miners, but Alyssa Gomez answered
with her first goal of the year less than a minute later to narrow the
margin heading into the break.

Southern Utah picked things up in the second 45, tripling its shot
count from the opening period. It was UTEP who found the goal first
however, as Bri Barreiro bounced a try off the crossbar and over the
line to extend its total to 4-1. The Thunderbirds continued to press
and were rewarded in the final moments when sophomore midfielder
Shelby Green collected a rebound off an Abbie Flandro shot and  buried
the ball into the net. Her second goal of the season set the final
tally at 4-2.

Thunderbird keeper Tessa Christensen started the match, allowing three
goals and recording two saves before being relieved by Taylor Bolding
in the second half. She also made two stops and gave up one score.

"I am proud of our players who bounced back after early miscues. It
showed some great maturity and competitiveness," commented Hogan. "We
are close to having a breakout season and ready to go on an unbeaten
streak."

The Thunderbirds next chance to get a road win will come this Monday
at 7:30 p.m. when they travel north for an in-state meeting with Utah
Valley. Coverage of the game will be available at www.suutbirds.com.
