Box Score Cedar City, Utah - The Thunderbird soccer team fell to Weber State on Friday afternoon 2–1 at the Thunderbird Soccer Field, after the Wildcats took the lead with just under three minutes to play.
The Thunderbirds struck first in the 13th minute, when Abbie Flandro had a shot ricochet in off the top post to give SUU a 1–0 lead. Flandro said she saw the play coming and was happy she could cap it off.
“I was just hoping the ball went to Payton (Bonino) because I could see the run coming off,” she said. “We have talked about doing a setup ball just like that and it just happened.”
For Flandro that was her third goal of the season.
The Wildcats would respond before halftime, as Stacy Bair took a cross from Mackenzie Harrison in the 33rd minute and headed the ball in to tie the match up at 1–1.
The second half was a defensive struggle as the team's only gave up a combined 10 shots, but in the 88th minute Bair was able to score her second goal of the match, this time off a cross from Madison Garlock, to give the Wildcats a 2–1 advantage.
With just under three minutes left SUU ratcheted up the intensity, but wasn't able to respond.
SUU head coach Becky Hogan said there were a few things that the team could have improved on during the match.
“Although I thought we played well, we didn't play our best,” she said. “People were tired, or out of position. We talked at the end that we have to have some individual accountability to figure out what got us into the situation where we're at the bottom of the conference when we should be sitting at the top. We beat Northern Colorado, we beat Eastern Washington, we're good, we just don't show up on certain days.”
WSU outshot SUU 14–8 and had a 9–4 advantage in shots on goal. Despite giving up the two goals, SUU keeper Taylor Bolding finished the match with four saves.
Next up for the Thunderbirds will be a home match on Saturday afternoon, as SUU will host the Idaho State Bengals. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and attendance is free of charge.
