Thunderbirds Tie With Lumberjacks, Season Comes To A Close

Box Score

Cedar City, Utah - SUU's match with Northern Arizona ended in a draw Friday at the Thunderbird Soccer Field, as the two teams were tied at 2–2 at the end of regulation and went scoreless in the two overtime periods.

With the tie the Thunderbirds are eliminated from post-season play, as they had to beat NAU to keep their Big Sky Tournament hopes alive.

Friday afternoon was also senior day for SUU, as Taylor Bolding, Tessa Christensen, Nancy Brich and Madison Wood were honored for their years of service to the team.

The Thunderbirds got on the board first in the 32nd minute, when Payton Bonino played a ball to Paige Robins and she was able to breakaway from the defender and put the ball in the back of the net putting SUU up 1–0. Neither team scored for the remained of the first half, giving SUU the advantage at the break.

SUU scored its second goal in the 56th minute when Logan Harker finished a pass from Shelby Green to give the Thunderbirds a 2–0 lead. The goal was Harker's third of the season.

SUU head coach Becky Hogan said she liked what she saw out of the front runners during the match, saying it was nice to see Robins score and break out of a little mid-season slump.

The Lumberjacks didn't strike until the 68th minute, when Haley Wingender put a penalty kick in the back of the net following a Thunderbird foul in the box.

NAU's second goal came in the final minute of regulation, as Torey Braly took a cross from Haley Wingender and was able to finish to force overtime with the score knotted up at 2–2.

Hogan said the team was just not able to create enough separation.

“Up 2–0 with plenty of opportunities to put the game away, we don't seize those opportunities, and anything you leave out on the table comes back to haunt you,” she said. “It's such a game of inches and we didn't make adjustments when we needed to make adjustments.”

Hogan went on to say that the emotions of senior day can have an impact on everyone, not just those being honored.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the pair of overtime periods, but neither team was able to finish leading to the match ending in a draw.

The Thunderbirds outshot the Lumberjacks 24–14, leading to NAU goalkeeper Natalie Gilbertson finishing the match with 11 saves. Bolding played all 110 minutes for SUU, and finished the match with four saves.

The Thunderbirds will finish the season with a 8–8–2 overall record, with a 3–5–2 mark in the Big Sky Conference. SUU's eight wins set a new season high for the program.

The field for the Big Sky Conference Tournament is set, with Idaho, Northern Colorado, Eastern Washington, Weber State, Montana and Sacramento State all qualifying for the post-season. The tournament will be held next week in Moscow, Idaho.
