Moraga, California - The Thunderbirds started their three game road trip on Wednesday night against the St. Mary's Gaels with a tough loss, falling 92–36.
The T-Birds were riding a three game winning streak coming into the contest, with victories against La Verne, Utah Valley and Bristol University.
SUU head coach Nick Robinson said the Gaels came out ready to play on Wednesday night.
"St. Mary's is the most skilled team we've played this season and they executed extremely well tonight," Robinson said.
The Gaels came out firing, going on a quick 9–0 run to start the contest, but the Thunderbirds broke the run with a Casey Oliverson spin move leading to a score. SMC had a few big runs in the half, including an 11–0 spurt midway through the 20 minute period that gave the Gaels a comfortable lead going into the break up 47–19.
SMC's Dane Pineau and Emmett Naar combined for 30 of SMC's points in the first half, scoring 16 and 14 respectively.
St. Mary's continued to dominate in the second half, eventually taking the contest 92–36.
"We played hard for 40 minutes, but struggled to find a rhythm at either end of the court and St. Mary's capitalized each time," Robinson said.
Guard James McGee led the way for the Thunderbirds with 15 points in 26 minutes of play. Trey Kennedy was second on the team in scoring with seven points.
Pineau finished with 20 points for SMC, Naar had 16 and Calvin Hermanson and Franklin Porter both finished with 15.
Coach Robinson said this contest was a difficult one, but the team will keep their heads up and move forward.
"I've got to do a better job of preparing our team for the next game. This one was ugly, but it's behind us," he said.
The Thunderbirds will continue their road trip on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana to take on IUPUI. Updates of that game can be followed on Twitter @SUUGameday.
The Jaguars are 3–9 this season, and are currently riding a three game losing streak.
Darell Combs is the leading scorer for IUPUI, averaging 15.9 points a contest. Jordan Pickett also averages double-digit points for the Jaguars.
