OGDEN, Utah – Southern Utah dropped to Weber State in its opening two games of its three-game series. The Wildcats topped The Thunderbirds 7-0 in the first matchup and 8-2 in the second.
“Today was all about us allowing them to have a big inning. In both games we allowed them to put crooked numbers up in one inning and that was the difference,” head coach Tom Gray said. “If we prevent that tomorrow and do a better job of hitting with runners on, we will be right there.”
Weber State tacked up the opening game's first runs in the bottom of the third with a six-run rally before adding a seventh run in the bottom of four. The Thunderbirds couldn't manage to score a run in the first matchup, resulting in a 7-0 Wildcat Victory.
Lyndsey Healey finished the game with Southern Utah's only hit. There were zero errors in the game as M. Flint was on the mound for the Wildcats and Katie Greenberg and Ashley Ostler each pitched six innings for Southern Utah.
The Wildcats opened the second game with a run in the bottom of the second before Southern Utah responded with a run in the top of four to tie the game at one. Healey walked and stole second before Jordan Theurer singled to the pitcher to advance Healey to third. Healey stole home on a first base error to put up Southern Utah's first run of the day.
Weber State clenched a run in the bottom of the fourth to regain its lead before Southern Utah battled from behind to tie the game, once again. Tanisha Anderson reached on an error by the pitcher before Kylee Wolf singled to right field to advance Anderson to third. Sarah Park reached on a fielder's choice to push Wolf to second and score Anderson.
The game saw a tie to enter the bottom of five before the Wildcats exploded for a five-run rally to blow the game open. Weber State tacked up an insurance run in the bottom of six to take the 8-2 game-two victory.
Southern Utah finished with four hits and three errors to Weber State's 12 hits and two errors. Kelli Hales finished with two hits for the Thunderbirds as Theurer and Wolf each finished with one. Hanna Wynn pitched just over four innings for the T-Birds before Ostler stepped in for relief.
Southern Utah will wrap up its series with Weber State on Saturday at noon.
