Box Score Edinburg, Texas - The Thunderbird soccer team won their fourth match in a row Sunday afternoon, as they knocked off the University of South Dakota 3–1 to wrap up play at the UTRGV Tournament.
"The conditions of this weekends games couldn't have been more adverse if you tried," SUU head coach Becky Hogan said. "Game delays, humidity, high temps, huge fast field, last minute schedule changes... We had a little bit of everything. But the good news is that we overcame all adversity and walked away with two wins in our pocket."
It didn't take much time at all for SUU to get on the board, as Ally Thimsen took a pass from Shelby Green and put a no look shot into the back of the net to put SUU up 1–0. It didn't take long for USD to respond, as Brenna Bliss took a pass from Elena Tsakakis, dribbled past the goalie and scored to tie the match at 1–1.
The Thunderbirds took the lead back in the 28th minute, when Green took a pass from Payton Bonino and put the ball in the back of the net, giving SUU a 2–1 lead.
Neither team scored again until about eight minutes into the second half, when Thimsen put in her second goal of the match, and her fourth of the season, to increase SUU's lead to 3–1.
SUU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Caldera played the entire match in goal for the third straight game, allowing just one goal and saving three balls.
Hogan said both sides of the ball are starting to come together well.
"In addition to our potent attack our young defensive line continues to get better each day," she said. "Today would have been a clean sheet except for an uncharacteristic mistake by Kaitlin. However, she rebounded well and made several strong saves after the early error. This response showed great maturity and I was happy with her play this weekend."
The Thunderbirds had a large shot advantage over the Coyotes, 19–8, and also had five more shots on goal.
The Thunderbirds will take some time off before their next match, which will be their Big Sky Conference season opener on September 25 against Portland State in Portland, Oregon.
"We have 10 days until our next road trip and we plan on squeezing the most out of our players between now and then," Hogan said. "Everyday of practice is a battle and we have almost 20 different players who could start at any given time. The depth is incredible and had lent itself to our team growing by leaps and bounds as they battle everyday in practice."
