Box Score St. George, Utah - The Thunderbird soccer team picked up their second win of the regular season Thursday night, as they outscored the Dixie State Red Storm on the road 2–1.
After a scoreless first half of play, the Thunderbirds struck first in the second with a goal from midfielder Jahna Tacson. The score was Tacson's first goal of the season. SUU head coach Becky Hogan said she is excited to see how the midfielder has worked back into the lineup.
“I'm very proud of the effort of Jahna Tacson, who is getting closer and closer to being full speed,” she said. “She is a fierce player who sets a defensive tone for our team. I'm thrilled to have her back in her original form. Her goal today was vintage Jahna.”
Dixie State tied the match up in the 74th minute, with a goal by forward Jasmine Arollo, as she took a pass from forward Tori Washington and put the ball in the back of the net tying the match at 1–1.
The Thunderbirds took the lead back in the 76th minute, as midfielder Abbie Flandro put a ball in the net from 25 yards out to put the Thunderbirds up 2–1, and that would remain the score until the final whistle blew giving SUU the win.
Hogan said this match provided an opportunity for the team to see how deep they truly are.
“We sat out a host of players for the majority of the game who are nursing injuries and this gave a chance to play our very deep bench,” she said. “TJ Thompson played significant minutes in the first half and did an exceptional job of pressing the other team and contributing offensively. Also making a nice debut for us was Saki Watanabe. She held down the middle for long stretches of time buzzing around on defense and playing solid on the attack.”
SUU outshot DSU 14–5 in the game, and had a 7–2 advantage in shots on goal.
Next up for the Thunderbirds is a home matchup with Utah Valley University. The match is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Attendance to all home SUU soccer matches is free.
