Box Score GREELEY, Colo. - The SUU soccer team traveled to Greeley, Colorado Friday night to play the Bears of Northern Colorado in a game that ended in a 3-1 loss for the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds played a strong first half, keeping the Bears scoreless for most of the half. With 25 seconds left before the end of the half, goalkeeper Destiny Collins blocked a shot only to have the deflection headed past her by UNC midfielder Mariel Gutierrez to give the Bears a 1-0 lead at halftime.
When the second half opened, it wouldn't take long for Northern Colorado to double their lead. In the 48th minute, forward Sydney Schroeder would go one-on-one with Collins and win the battle to make it 2-0 Bears.
The Bears would score once more in the 84th minute when Gutierrez scored her second goal of the game off a cross into the box by forward Maddie Roberts. SUU was now staring at a 3-0 deficit with just over five minutes left to play.
Less than a minute after the goal by Gutierrez, sophomore Devri Hartle would answer back for the Thunderbirds when she scored her first goal of the season off a deflection by UNC goalkeeper Madeline Burdick.
The Thunderbirds would not have a enough time to get on the board again and found themselves down 3-1 after 90 minutes of play.
The next game for SUU will be this Sunday against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
