Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The SUU soccer team (2-9-1) finished up their weekend road trip in Grand Forks Sunday in a game that ended in a 4-1 loss for the Thunderbirds.
The Fighting Hawks wasted no time scoring the first goal of the game in the third minute of play. Midfielder Bella Mantaro took a pass from forward Veronica Kessler and placed it just over the head of goalkeeper Destiny Collins to put North Dakota up 1-0 early.
The Thunderbirds outshot the Fighting Hawks 16-10 in the first half, but would not be able to find the back of the net and went into halftime trailing 1-0.
UND blew the game open in the second half, adding goals by defender Emily Smithson, forward Veronica Kessler, and forward Katie Moller throughout the half. They would have a 4-0 lead with less than 18 minutes left to play in the game.
With 10 minutes to go, junior midfielder Haley Adams would break up the shutout when she was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Her first goal of the season would make the score 4-1.
The Thunderbirds would not be able to mount a comeback in the final minutes, losing the game 4-1. The team will return to Cedar City next weekend for their last two home games of the 2016 season.
