CEDAR CITY, Utah – IUPUI took advantage of Southern Utah errors early in the game, guiding the Jaguars to a 101-81 victory over the Thunderbirds.
Randy Onwuasor led the Thunderbirds with 20 points. James McGee and Jacob Calloway added 16 and 15, respectively. Will Joyce led the Thunderbirds in rebounds with six.
The Thunderbirds struggled to keep control of the ball offensively, giving up 18 turnovers throughout the match-up.
"To me that was the real story of the game, because we had eight (turnovers) in the first 10 minutes," head coach Todd Simon said of the team's tunovers. "So all of the sudden there's a quick separation of 12 or 15 points, and we tried to get all those points back on one possession."
SUU took a quick 5-0 lead to tip off the game before the Jaguars pulled ahead at 7-6. The Thunderbirds never saw the lead again.
Onwuasor put together a six-point scoring streak to pull the Thunderbirds within six of the Jaguars at 18-24 before a 13-2 Jag rally put UIPUI ahead at 37-20.
The Thunderbirds trailed the Jaguars 51-29 at halftime.
The Jags held their comfortable lead throughout the second half, extending their lead to as much as 35. The Thunderbirds found a rythm in the final minutes, cutting the gap to 20 to round out the game at 81-101.
The Thunderbirds hit the road for a five-game stretch, beginning with Seattle University on Monday, Dec. 19, followed by San Jose State on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
"It's always nice to have a game right after (a loss) just to forget," McGee said. "We have another opportunity to come back and show how we can really play, because that wasn't us tonight."
