T-Bird Softball Wraps Up Play In California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Play wrapped up on Sunday in the Gaucho Classic for the Thunderbirds, who fell to UC Santa Barbara, the hosts of the Classic, 10-2.

“We did not do the little things correctly today,” SUU head coach Tom Gray said. “Not doing those little things well cost us runs. UCSB is a solid offensive team that executes very well, but today we helped them out. We will need to address a number of things in practice.”

After a scoreless top half of the first inning for the Thunderbirds, the Gauchos got going and hung four runs on the T-Birds in the bottom of the first.

SUU put their first run on the board in the top of the second, when Karlee Manzione got on base with a single and Paige Johnson drove her house with an RBI double.

The T-Birds held UCSB scoreless through the second and third inning, and found more success offensively in the top of the fourth when Manzione scored on a double by Evalyn Cota and was aided by an error by the Gauchos. Unfortunately for the T-Birds, that would be their last run of the game.

UCSB put three more runs on the board in the fourth inning on five hits, and the Gauchos wouldn't stop there as they put one more run on the board in the fifth and two more in the sixth to end the game early.

The Thunderbirds will continue tournament play next week, as they will be back in Las Vegas to take part in the Alexis Park Resort Classic. While their in Vegas the T-Birds will take on UNLV, New Mexico State, Florida Atlantic, Oregon and St. Marys.
