RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The SUU softball team wrapped up play at the Mizuno Invitational on Saturday, and were beaten by Boston and Yale to finish the event without a victory.
The Thunderbirds (3-23) are just about a week away from the start of the Big Sky Conference season, and this was the fifth tournament event they had played in to start the season.
Boston 5, SUU 0
In a rematch of a game that started the weekend for the Thunderbirds, the Boston Terriers topped the Thunderbirds for the second day in a row with a 5-0 victory.
Neither team scored the first six innings of the game, a streak that was broken by Boston in the top of the sixth with a run.
The Terriers opened the game up with four runs in the top of the seventh, and the T-Birds weren't able to respond falling 5-0.
Kirsten Hostetler pitched the whole game for SUU, allowing five runs on 10 hits. The T-Birds were only able to get two hits against Boston.
“The turning point in the Boston game was in the fifth when we got runners to second and third but couldn't score,” SUU head coach Tom Gray said. “It is simply about good execution. We will have to work on that.”
Yale 5, SUU 3
After falling in a 3-0 hole on Saturday morning, the Thunderbird softball team could push back but eventually fall to Yale 5-3.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and added in another in the bottom of the second, to build a 3-0 lead over the Thunderbirds. After a scoreless third inning the Thunderbirds were able to get going.
The T-Birds scored three runs on a home run by Megan Reed, that scored Jordan Theurer and Kylee Wolf, and tied the game up at three apiece.
The Bulldogs were able to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, and unfortunately for the Thunderbirds they were not able to respond and eventually fell to Yale 5-3.
Hanna Wynn pitched all six innings for the T-Birds, allowing five runs on eight hits.
“In the Yale game we did a solid job of coming back from a three run deficit,” Gray said. “I was happy about that, but we need to find a way to win those games.
The Thunderbirds will take on the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on March 16th, in what will be a double-header.
The Big Sky Conference season will start for SUU on March 25th in Pocatello, Idaho, as the Thunderbirds will play against Idaho State.
