POCATELLO, Ida. - After winning two contests on Friday, the Thunderbird softball team fell to the Idaho State Bengals 7-3 on Saturday.
With the loss the T-Birds now have a 5-26 overall record, with a 2-1 mark in the Big Sky Conference.
Despite losing on Saturday, SUU head coach Tom Gray was very happy with the performance over the past two days.
“I was very proud of the way we payed this entire weekend,” he said. “I believe we came together as a team and played that way. We executed well in all aspects of the game and I still believe our best days are ahead of us. The difference today was Idaho State was able to get the timely hit. You have to tip your hat to them.”
Neither team was able to get on the board until the bottom of the third inning when the Bengals put four runs up to take an a 4-0 advantage.
The T-Birds put up their first runs in the top of the fourth, when Kylee wolf scored on a sacrifice fly and Jordan Theurer scored on a single to center field to cut into the Idaho State lead.
After SUU was scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Bengals put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the frame to increase their lead to 7-2.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh, when the Thunderbirds had one last chance and despite putting one more run on the board the T-Birds fell to the Bengals 7-3.
Cheyenne Cudahy, Hanna Wynn and Kirsten Hostetler all saw time in the circle for the Thunderbirds, with Cudahy being given the loss.
ISU's Bailey Foster was given the victory, pitching three innings allowing four hits and two runs.
The Thunderbirds will host their home opener next Friday, as the Thunderbirds will host the Portland State Vikings on Friday for two games and on Saturday for one game to wrap up the series.
“We will start getting ready for Portland State and I expect us to elevate our game again,” Gray said.
