Softball Wraps Tournament Play In Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Play wrapped up at the UNLV Classic on Sunday afternoon for the Thunderbird softball team, as they fell to St. Mary's 13-6 at Eller Media Field.

“Today was not our best effort,” SUU head coach Tom Gray said. “There is really no excuse or reason for it. We simply need to play the game with more focus and heart.”

The Thunderbirds started things right in the top of the first inning, as they put two runs on the board to get things started. Peyton Hart and Jordan Theurer both came across the plate for the T-Birds to give them an advantage.

The Gaels were able to fire right back, as they hung four runs on the T-Birds in the bottom of the first inning on five hits.

The high scoring output for SUU continued in the top of the second as the T-Birds put three more runs up on the board to take a 5-4 lead going into the bottom on the second.

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the third, when St. Mary's put one up, that the T-Birds matched in the top of the fourth to stay ahead.

That was when the onslaught from the Gaels started, as they put two runs on the board in the fourth inning and followed that up with six runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

The Thunderbirds had six runs on seven hits with four RBIs.

Next up for the SUU will be a tournament in Riverside, California that will run next week on Friday and Saturday.
