Thunderbirds Struggle to Score, Fall to Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Thunderbirds softball team wrapped up their weekend series against the Sacramento State Hornets on Saturday, and fell to their Big Sky Conference foe 4-0.

“We simply did not do a good enough job at the plate,” SUU head coach Tom Gray said. “There were a few adjustments, but when we had RBI opportunities we didn't get it done. At the same time, we need to acknowledge that Sac State's pitcher did a great job.”

The loss will leave the Thunderbirds with a 7-35 overall record, with a 3-9 mark in the Big Sky Conference. Sacramento State will remain atop the Big Sky with an 11-1 conference mark.

Much like the contests on Friday, the Hornets got on the board early with one run in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second.

Unfortunately for SUU, they couldn't get any runs up on the board while they held the Hornets scoreless through the third and fourth inning.

Sacramento State put up one more run in the bottom of the fifth, which would wrap up the scoring for the day and give the Hornets a 4-0 victory.

Celina Matthias was in the circle for the third time this series, and picked up her third win in two days by shutting out the T-Birds.

Jordan Theurer and Hanna Wynn split time in the circle for SUU, with Theurer allowing three runs on seven hits as Wynn allowed one run on four hits.

Hanna Wynn came in and was outstanding again,” Gray said about his pitcher. “We need to get her some run support.”

SUU will take a quick break from conference play on Wednesday, as they will host Dixie State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The T-Birds will host Montana on Saturday and Sunday for a three game series, with two games on Saturday and one on Sunday.
